A phakic intraocular lens is an additional lens implanted inside an eye that still has its natural lens. ICL is one type of phakic lens. The exact lens design determines the treatment plan.
Understanding the terms
PIOL means phakic intraocular lens. “Phakic” indicates that the natural lens is retained. This differs from cataract surgery, which removes the natural lens, and Ortho-K, which uses a removable contact lens.
Ask the surgeon to name the lens manufacturer, model, placement and intended correction. Do not assume all implanted lenses have identical indications or risks.
Why a lens implant may be discussed
A lens implant may be considered when corneal laser treatment would not be an appropriate choice. A detailed examination must establish that the internal anatomy and health of the eye are suitable.
